ME> No the curled cabbage is not what you call "savoy", that's also here
ME> "Savooikool" or green cabbage.
ME> The curled cabbage is not making a crob but goes up in one stem with
ME> very curled leaves, and it are only those leaves that can be eaten,
ME> without the thicker nerves in the middle of the leaves. It is not so
ME> sweet as the Savoy cabbage, but I like it very much.
I think you are talking about what I call kale maybe. That has a
curly leave and doesn't form a head. I grow that too. I"ve
always heard it's better after a frost, but I don't normally get
those to know. But I like what I grow anyway, I just pull it when
the weather starts warming in the spring.
ME> In End of July I planted a second time, those plants became not so big
ME> and a few of them are still in the garden to be used further and after.
ME> When are the Savoy's good to eat at yours? Somewhere in March or
ME> April?
I can plant savoy or other cabbages from about Oct to Jan. I
guess March or maybe early April is about the end of the growing
season for them. It's starts getting hotter and they don't taste
as good after that. Do you grow Brussel Sprouts? I love those
but don't get very good results. I just don't have a long enough
season of cool weather to get sprouts of any size. I have some in
now but I don't know if I'll see any sprouts. Last year I never
got any. But usually I get some but small. I would think you
might have the perfect climate for Brussel Sprouts.
ME> No not really growing. The containerplants that are all in the
ME> greenhouse are tropical or subtropical plants to be kept from getting
ME> frost. Only very few subtropical plants will still be growing a bit,
ME> but most of those plants are in rest till next Spring when the sun is
ME> much stronger again. Then I also start to sew some veggies in it.
ME> There is no way to grow veggies in the greenhouse during winter
ME> without heating rather hard. That's too expensive.
I imagine heating would be far too expensive but at least you can
save your plants and have them again in the spring.
