I think you've forgotten to set flow control on your modem!!!

SEAlink won't send more than 8*133 bytes ahead, so it has less chance of
overflowing your buffer.  Xmodem has 0 chance of overflowing - it requires
an ACK after every 133 bytes!

Bob and you have very different symptoms.  Bob only gets an error on the
first block.  You get errors all the time.  FIX YOUR FLOW CONTROL! BFN.
