Right now although there are numerous ways to by step the bandwidth
problem (NTSC signals require a rate of refresh that is greater than
current EISA busses can carry) VLB still doesn't do it. PCI has the
capability to handle the full signal over the computer
bus, but it costs enough to really off set any other cost advantage you
will get. Even the Mac Nubus has trouble with the video signal. The
best solution "IN MY OPINION" will be the MAC with a PCI bus or the new
PowerPC from IBM that has the PCI bus. Both should have 3rd party
video boards really soon now. The only other option is specialized
boards that by pass the computer boards all together.
First find out what the respective systems can do. SGI does great
work but I still don't know what it would take to lay down that signal
on video. Assemble the various packages IBM/TARGA, MAC, SGI, PowerPC
and what it costs to get the output you need. SVHS, BETA, Film and
then get the cheapest one that will do what you want done. Like I
wrote before, I found that the cheapest set up to do SVHS at a
corporate level would be about $20K. Lighting is very important.
Demos take time to do (do them as best as you can). Thats what any
potential customer will want to see before you even get a shot at any
project.
Just incase your dream becomes a nightmare, get as close to
standard equipment as possible so you can off load it quickly. I've
seen some pretty powerful SGI systems that originally went for big
bucks that won't run anything other than the software speccificly
written for it. Now as they try to off load these $35K units they
can't get a fraction of what they cost.
Look at IBM boards that will do video, the MAC, and the soon to be
introduced IBM PowerPC.
