It's all a matter of WHO is doing the assuming, isn't it?
I've written a program for genealogy, which assumes nothing about dates.  It 
even considers the Gregorian calendar which varies from ours just enough to 
cause me to lose some hair programming to account for it.
I wish you success with your dates, but feel that your assumption is a matter 
of personal taste -- a taste which most current software disagrees with.
