My wife goes to the University of Phoenix online school (one of the
biggest) and everybody there has a E-mail address. The main campus is in
San Francisco and they don't even use their mail much, they use their
usenet newsgroup access on the schools private server to communicate,
post projects or whatever.
Why would it be costly to access a account at a distance? You don't have
to call _there_ to access your account, you go through your local ISP
for mail accounts and one would think and hope it's a local number..
That reminds me of a elderly neighbor, every time he sends a E-mail to
Washington DC he asks if it will show up as a long distance call on his
phone bill.
I hate to say this but for somebody with as many computer credentials as
you say you have, you don't know much about E-mail or how networks work.
