From: "Phil Payne" > Programming Law Number 1: variables won't; constants aren't. "Phil - Foreign Vouchers needs a little sort and tab programme to collate foreign vouchers by issuing bank. Shouldn't take long - just an array and shell sort ought to do it." This was back in the Assembler days. "OK. How many vouchers, how many banks maximum?" "I'll ask." Later .. "They think about twenty, so let's say forty." As the programmer, I mentally made it eighty. I wrote the programme and tested it. We reviewed the project. It was a tiny machine - a 32KB IBM 360/25. "Shall we make the array bigger?" "How much bigger?" "Bugger it - use the whole machine." The final version would support 40,000 unique banks - up somewhat from the estimate of 20. 27,000 in the first live run. I never knew the world HAD so many banks. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
