subject: tape drive help???

On 07-27-97, JOHN ALDRICH said to ALL:
JA>Can someone help me here? I've got an Exabyte 8200 here on a SCSI

JA>bus! From what I have been able to read of the docs on the Exabyte home
JA>page, it *should* work! It reads the tape drive and accesses it just fine.
JA>However whenever it starts to back up the system, the SCSI bus locks solid

JA>greatly appreciated. The SCSI controller is a Future Domain ISA (borrowed
JA>until I can afford my own UW SCSI controller) John
I've had some problems with my Exabyte 8500 drive, too, that were somehow
related to SCSI bus configuration. The 8500 supports SCSI-2 and synchronous
negotiation and those turned out to be key in configuring my Adaptec 1542CF
host adapter. The 8200 is SCSI-1 and doesn't appear to support synchronous
negotiation. You may want to check the HA configuration and drop back to
defaults or even the lowest common denominator settings (I have no experience
with Future Domain HAs so I can't point you in the right direction).
Might be worth trying different cables and terminators. If the tape drive is
not the only device on the bus, you might need active terminators for any
SCSI-2 devices attached to the bus...
