What I find happening here is not so much the fact that his nails are
growing too long as they just get those sharp little points on the end. No
extensive "grinding" was required, just a really quick touch to the end of
each nail, not even a full second, to knock the point off.
Oh, then that's not so bad. Here, the nails grow faster than I can keep
up, so I'd have to either remember to schedule regular weekly sessions,
or cut THEN grind.
KJ> I solved that by not allowing ANYBODY on my shoulders or
KJ> neck.
They're both usually allowed a "last ride" on the way to bed each night.
The rest of the time it's no higher than the chin. Randy was fairly well
behaved about being on the shoulder, but when Max came home I had to make
some changes in my own behavior. He definitely would get king of the roost
syndrome. So for both, it's the last treat of the day and really brief.
I only allow it in the car, and then, only with Kirsche. Rico
won't leave my face alone when he's up on a shoulder, and the others are
simply not consistently face-safe. I don't teach any of the babies about
shoulders either--they grow up only knowing about laps, shirt collars
and forearms. There IS one exception to this, and that's cockatiels.
I've never had a vicious face-eating cockatiel, so I let them climb
wherever they want to.
