-> I use the 525 Lyman for deer hunting. It works great out of my
-> 11/87 with the rifled choke tube. Out of the 14 deer our group
-> took this year, 5 were killed with the lyman slug using the 45
-> gr of Blue Dot. All were shot between 40 & 60 yards and none
-> needed more than one. That flat point has seems to have a lot
-> of "knock down" to it. That load has so much recoil that I
-> wont shoot it out of any of my pump guns.
DA> heh heh heh. That's a kicker, ain't it? I backed it down to 40
DA> grains of Blue Dot. Are you using it with the WAA12R red wad and the
DA> Win AA hull? For that combination, I backed it down to 40 grains of
DA> Blue dot.
DA> Also a little lighter one was where I used a plastic Federal Hunting
DA> hull with paper basewad ("Hi Power" or "Dove" or "Game load")
DA> with 44 grains and the WAA12R wad.
DA> I seemed to get more accuracy with loads using the WAA12F114 wad, than
DA> with the WAA12R wad. What's your most accurate load with the 525
DA> Lyman slug?
I tried the White wads with the AA cases that I use for trap.
The accuracy kind of sucked. Then I went to the WAA12F114s and
45 grains of Blue Dot and they dropped right in there. I can keep
3 shots in the bottom of a 3lb coffee can at 100 yds from a bench
rest on the days that I don't have flinchitis. I also tried a load
using the same powder charge I use for trap. 19 grains of Red Dot.
I use the WAA12F114 wad with this. I'm going to try it at the next
plate shoot. It's not as fast as the Blue Dot load but it dosen't
have much more recoil than my trap loads, and it's not hard to
kill a plate. I ordered that 1oz Lee mould from Midway. I'm going
to try to come up with a good target/self defense load for it.
I don't figure I need "that" much power for a self defense load,
and the accuracy and quick recovery time would be more to my
advantage with a more moderate load. I'm definately keeping that
hi power job for deer hunting, for that, it's the best I've found.
DA> You shoulda seen me testing the first loads. I laid cardboard down on
DA> the firing line, laid shotgun down on cardboard, tied a string to
DA> trigger, laid carboard over the shotgun, laid a 2x4 over the top
DA> cardboard, stood off to side with one foot on the 2x4", and pulled
DA> string. I figured if it was going to blow up, I'd rather injure foot
DA> than blow off head. I shoot them in a bolt action 12 ga, and yikes,
DA> is that a shoulder killer.
We could have used you on our EOD team back in the 60s. You've got
that adventurous spirit! If you see the flash AND hear the noise,
you know your not dead.
I think I'm too old to try that load in a 12 ga bolt gun. The old
joints don't snap back like they used to. I'll bet you would have
to duct tape your hearing protectors to your head to keep them from
getting knocked off :)
