BB> Hi Ivy,
Hi, Bobbie;
II> When the Emergency Services release 911 recordings to the news media,
II> It probably has to do with the fact that the calls are to the local
II> emergency services, (police, fire, etc), and according to the
II> Communications Act of 1934 as ammended, a person, (or orginization) is
II> free to record their own calls, (subject to certain conditions), and
II> may release those recordings as they see fit.
BB> Aha! Then they don't need the person's permission who is doing the
BB> calling?
Unless the law has changed in the last few years, (quite possible), I
would say not calls to emergency (Govt.) services.
II> One specific exemption to the "beeper" law is that a broadcast station
II> may record and/or broadcast phone calls when it is understood that the
II> call is to be broadcast, such as a call-in show or a telephone
II> interview without using a beeper. You may also record YOUR OWN phone
II> calls provided that at the start of the call you inform the person on
II> the other end that you are recording and get their permission to
II> record. This must be at the beginning of the conversation. I would
II> assume that everyone knows that all calls to 911 WILL be recorded.
BB> Never "assume" *anything*. I would be curious to know just how many
BB> do/don't know. Sounds like another case of people using cellphones.
BB> Look how many didn't know they could be heard on the scanner. I'll bet
BB> many people don't even realize that calls to 911 know/record which
BB> phone number they are dialing from.
We have "Enhanced 911" here... it not only tells the operator your name,
address and phone number, but also other information, such as handicaps,
medical conditions or other things which a fire/rescue person/crew should
know, and that information is available to the dispatcher within seconds
after the call comes in. A lot of "noise" has been generated around here
advertising it. There was even a national TV ad telling that Sheboygan
was one of the first places to have this service), and every phone line
gets billed 27c a month to pay for it. That's 27c for my voice & 27c for
my BBS line. I think 54c a month is cheap insurance.
(Sorry, I know this is off topic, but I got carried away.)
BB> Happy Holidays!
And Season's Greetings to you and everyone in the echo!
Ivy
... In case of 9-1-1, call FIRE............ No, wait.
