During WW11 my mother, like other mums in Britain, had a job. When she came
home, the first thing she had to do was prepare dinner.
While she peeled the spuds, she would have my exercise book propped up in
front of the kitchen sink. She would then put me through my spelling list.
At the end of the week any words that I knew well would be taken off the
list. Any that I still got wrong went on next weeks list. Occasionally she
would go over old lists, if she found a word that I misspelt, it would go
back on the current list.
It was also a time when mum and son could have some time talking to each
other.
I remember the time with affection.
