One one of my visits to the USA, I found myself in the company of a group
of American women for an evening's drinking. Many of them had in common the
fact that their jobs brought them into contact with men from other
countries. As the evening wore on, the conversations gradually became more
frank and tended towards a common topic amongst women. One, an airport
security guard, was quite forthright: "Make a move on me, buddy, and
I'll break your arm." Since she had certain attributes(*) that suited
her to her job, I found the thought of my doing so somewhat improbable. I
asked why she had made the statement, and from group discussion found that
it was quite common to be "hit on" by foreign men. Apparently the
men's idea of American morals and how to behave towards American women was
gained from watching American soaps and movies...

It's not unique to Americans, of course. I recall a trip to Singapore with
a group of friends. There was general agreement that the "Singapore
Girls" on the Singapore Airlines jet were universally exotic and
desirable. Personally, I didn't find them any more attractive than I would
have a group of New Zealand stewardesses. And, in my limited experience,
it's the same the world over. Regardless of their culture, people exhibit
the same variety and ratio of beautiful/plain, friendly/unfriendly etc.

(*) She was built like a quarterback with a face that could best be
described as homely, and an aggressive personality.
