A Shetland pony is about four feet high - it's a breed from the Shetland
Islands. Curously, for such highly bred creatures, they're usually quite
amenable. A pit pony is a breed used in coal mines to draw tubs full of
coal.

And a cross-breed? A small pony with (usually) a very good temperament.
