Some genius 10-15 years ago promoted the building of small, part-time local
power plants fed by then-cheap natural gas.  These of course are now run
all summer long, as demand creeps up (slowly, but up).  Manipulation and
speculation then built the true bedrocks of the modern economy, Enron and
its ilk.

Clean-coal research has stopped.  Oil we know about.  Hydro is maxed out.
Nuclear is still political poison.  Wind and solar are still priced out of
the picture.

We have large areas of the country (the Sunbelt) that are
near-uninhabitable without air conditioning half the year.  It's the
growing part of the country, and it now has a politcal majority.  Enough
said?

Gun that 6,000 lb SUV and smile.  The new tax law has made your Hummer
fully deductible, if you're a business, but your "truck" has to
weigh more than 6,000 lbs.
