With everything connected, at command prompt run: ipconfig /all
(assuming NT/W2k/XP).

I wonder if you might have two default gateways (probably bad).

For completeness, you could also run route print
where default gateways show as Destination 0.0.0.0 and Netmask 0.0.0.0.

Write down the IP of your problem news server (e.g. ping the name of the
news server and note the IP). When the problem occurs, run: tracert  -d 
x.x.x.x
where x.x.x.x is the IP of the failing news server. Compare the path taken
with the path when there are no problems.
