OK, I'm going to have to come out of the closet and admit that I
agree with both of you to an extent. I lean to your side, honestly,
but.....
The NFL is clearly not past racial inequality. It is, I think,
getting better, but it is a long way from being equal. However, an
important point is often lost in discussions about equality, be it
for minorities, women, Buddhists, whatever - each side is going to
tend to either play down the importance of the case, or blow it out
of proportion. Last year was fairly clearly a bad year for minority
coaches. Too many positions were open for some not to get the shot.
However, I don't believe that if the situation is the same next
year, with that many coaching positions open, the same thing would
happen.
The only hire that utterly eludes me is the Niners. Mariuchi has
little, if anything, to qualify him to jump into such a position,
except that he's Italian, as is DeBartolo. I didn't get that hire
the day it was announced, and I still don't today.
