One of the trailers shown with "101 Dalmations" today was for
"Hercules." It was a musical number where five women painted on a frieze
come to life and sing about what a manly hero is their man Herc. The
music reminds me of Billy Joel's bouncy work in "Oliver & Company", and
the animation is the flattest I have seen since "Toot, Whistle, Plunk,
Boom" (the 1953 short that won an Oscar, remember?).
If this selection is typical, Disney Animation is taking a well-deserved
break from the increasingly realistic visual style we saw in "The Lion
King" and "Pocohontas". I'm not saying it's good or bad, just different.
And different is good, right? They are also taking a much more
lighthearted, even slapstick approach--less like "Aladdin's" Genie than
"George of the Jungle" (which the following trailer announced is also
being done in live action).
It's much too early to pass any judgements yet. I still don't know who
is directing and who's doing the music--important issue to me--but so
far, it looks like we've got another long impatient wait ahead of us.
