9GB and 18GB drives have not been made for a while, and when they *were*
being made everything cost more. Many vendors price used, refurbished,
or surplus items based on the original new price rather than in relation
to the current price of more advanced technology.

E.g., One of the drives in my machine is a 9GB Seagate U2W drive
(ST39102LW) for which I paid $700+ in 1997. If I were determined to get
an identical drive, the best price I see on TechBargains for one that is
not described up-front as "refurbished" is $117. That's not a bad price
compared to the $700+ I paid (and list price was higher still). But I
can buy a current-model ST336607LW (4 times the capacity, Ultra 320,
faster, quieter [the ST39102LW sounds like a Mack truck], cooler) *from
the same vendor* for only $148. I could get one on eBay for less.
