bilateral trade agreement with the USA, which some consider will be a
reward for our "me too" support in Iraq.

Doom-sayers predict that any bilateral trade agreement with the USA would
include provisions requiring free access for US producers of GM products to
the local market (currently, there are various restrictions, e.g. GM foods
have to labelled). According to one theory, we would end up dependent on a
supply of patented GM seed for our crops.

I don't know the details, but there was a suggestion that once a farmer
starts using GM seed, it may be difficult to stop. I think the seed
suppliers can argue that you have to continue paying fees as long as the GM
component can be found in your produce.
