At my college, we have some really old books in the library (1700's) and they
have rope in the spines of the book. The ropes are usually in tripples and
seam to go from the front cover to the back. Even books dated in the late
1800's have this feature. I thought this is how earily books were bound.
perhaps then these books have rope in addition to glue.
I am not a book collector or know much about the history.

One of the books has a copyright date of 1921. So would this be a later of
the series or is this about the begining? I have about 20 of these little
books and the one is the only one with a copyrigth date.
When these were bought the saleslady was claiming eairly 1800's but after
looking at the books i thought they had to be much more recent.
Any tips or clues on how to tell when a book is written?
thanks for all the info
