It is needed, as the lowest common denominator. Dale suggested moving to 
EMSI - this would instantly put systems which don't support EMSI in 
violation of standards. Are either of you planning to rewrite those products 
to comply?

How about connections which aren't good enough to support EMSI handshaking? 
Or products which have slightly incompatible implementations? The idea 
behind FTS-1 was in part that it was so simple, it was (more or less) 
guaranteed to succeed.

Making EMSI the preferred protocol I wouldn't mind, but removing FTS-1 is a 
big mistake.
