Jean: I think you will find a new crankshaft is needed when the motor is
turning counter-clockwise, the timing lobes and the crankshaft throws
would all be out! A mechanical fuel pump would operate in reverse.
Diesel is definitely safer and cheaper to run, but I don't know how many
marinas will have diesel fuel. A proper gas marine engine should have a
SEALED carburetor to prevent gas leaks and I also believe some sort of
drip tray to prevent gas leaking onto the block. I remember seeing
special carburetors for V8's in a custom catalog put out by Eidlebrock.
I think diesel is safer by a fair bit, but the biggest problem would
be the availability factor: which I think would determine which is
better. I wouldn't want the job of filling the fuel tanks using Jerry
cans, with fuel bought at a service station. But I guess you might be
able to get a fuel oil tanker in for a fill-up.
