In an effort to alleviate the effects of the Y2K bug onto Fidonet, and
motivated by an idea from Robert Pearson, I compiled Release 2 of my year
2000 toolkit package. The idea is not only to provide Y2K information like
how to fix your own system, but also to provide a tool that can
automatically process PKT files and fix all sorts of structural and logical
errors that might have crept into the PKT file due to non Y2K-ready
software at your downlink's or uplink's side. It is recommended that any
routing system installs this software, as soon as it is out of testing
phase. Here is the announcement:

                          PKTDATE 1.0 is  a  program that can analyse
                          PKT files for structural errors that result
                          from year 2000 related bugs in the creating
                          software and automatically fix such  broken
                          PKT  files.   It is intended for use at hub
                          level in the Fidonet distribution structure
                          in order to  alleviate  the  effects of the
                          year 2000 problem on the  smooth  operation
                          of  Fidonet.   Also  included  is a general
                          information text on  the  year 2000 problem
                          in Fidonet and tools for analysing MSG  and
                          Squish  message base files.  Includes OS/2,
                          Win32, DOS, Linux and Amiga executables and
                          source code.  Unzip with -d option!

To the participants of the 2000 and FIDO2000.GER areas and other year 2000
freaks, I would like to encourage you to test this program and send all
comments back to me. In particular, if you know of a year 2000 problem that
occurs in PKT files and is not treated by Pktdate or could be treated more
intelligently (i.E. if the date is screwed up in a reproducible manner,
Pktdate could perhaps undo the calculation instead of just stamping a
default date, or similar things), please tell me! Pktdate will be the more
successful the more feedback I get from you.

This is the first public release of Pktdate. As soon as it proven to run
stable on other systems except mine, I will try to distribute it in Fidonet
routing structure as wide as possible.
