A router is handy because it can be used to 'hide' the inside
network. Most have some firewall capability.

A switch is like a hub only smarter. A hub forwards network
packets to all ports, a switch forwards only to a specific port.

The best thing is to have a router with a switch behind it, between
the router and an internal network.

You could put a switch between the BEFSR11 and your network, or you
could place a hub there.

Your linksys probably has a web interface to allow configuration to
block ports, protocols, etc.
