Well, if you want "cheap and dirty," Radio Shack has a center-loaded
telescoping antenna for portable scanners which is supposed to work well
on 30-50, 150-170 and 450 MHz, however for 150 and 450 MHz bands, I have
found that their "rubber duck" works as well or maybe even slightly
better, at least on my portables.  Both of these models are available
for a few dollars at R.S.  For base units, there are right-angle adapters
which will allow them to be used, but I don't know if R.S. has them.  If
not, try the Ham radio supply houses or electronic supply stores that
sell to the TV shops if you can find one in your area.
