Your terminal going into another mode is complient with the original meaning of
"Shift Out".

The acompanying code for SO is SI, Shift In. You may get your terminal back
into text mode by typing control O.

What appears on some screens as a musical note IS a control character. I
repeat: bad idea to use that in the text part of a Fidonet message.
