To look a little bit around that, I installed v2.6 again. Wonder what: box 
drawing _is_ working. With the same console settings, which don't work 
with v2.8.
But with both versions (2.6 and 2.8), only the single line or double line 
box signs are correctly in the list. All the other signs suffer with "bad" 
signs at the edges or crosspoints.
So, it isn't due to 32-bit, but to 2.8, I think.
