Hello, Terry. Quoting your message to All:
TM> Does anyone know what Steve Carlton's record was the year he won about
TM> a third of his team's games? As I recall, he won about 25 games for a
TM> last place Cardinals team. He must have had a great record as a
TM> "stopper."
It was closer to _half_ the team's wins (45.8%, to be precise).
In 1972, he led the NL with 27 wins (against just 10 losses), for a
club--it was not the Cards, but the Phillies--that won only 59 games.
Nobody else on the staff won more than 7.
That season, Carlton also led the league in ERA (1.97) starts (41),
complete games (30), innings pitched (346.1), strikeouts (310) and,
naturally, Cy Young Awards (1).
... I finally ran out of nothing to say.
