FR> CR: Batya Gur, LITERARY MURDER, 155/357
ST> Fred, tell me about this. I sell a lot of copies, but haven't decided
ST> yet if I want to read it.
I finished it--grabbed my attention immediately. Strong on character
development and also atmosphere. The protagonist is Michael Ohayon,
Superintendent of the Criminal Investigations Division In Jerusalem. He's
got a boss he doesn't like, and who doesn't like him--think it's Ohayon's
college education, among other things.
Two lit. professors in the English Dept are killed on the same weekend--one
apparently an accident and the other obviously murder.
Heh--Batya Gur, according to the brief bio, teaches literature in
Jerusalem--I would like to meet some of her colleagues--since most of the
characters in the book, aside from the police, are faculty or staff, I
suspect many of her colleagues went out and bought the book also--looking to
see if they could identify any of her "fictional" faculty and staff--
especially to see if they could recognize the victims...
It's a police procedural, obviously--my favorite type, and a good one. She
has at least one other out and one forthcoming, probably out already as this
was published in the early 90s. I will be looking around for them. The
problem of course is that her books have to be translated, so if some of the
first ones don't sell, then it's doubtful about the later ones.
Any thing else you would like to know?
Other favorites of mine are PD James, Martha Grimes, Elizabeth George, Anne
Perry (Inspt. Monk series), William Bayer, LP Davies, Ellis Peters-- that
should give you a glimpse into what I like in my mysteries.
