Hi Mark,
As Ralph said if you have a >8GB-capable-BIOS, shouldn't be a problem -
physically.
Thing to look out for might be whether the TP has a heating problem with
e.g. using a 5400 RPM drive vice a current 4200RPM, if drive-bay is not
well ventilated. Be aware that some of the drive connectors are
*fragile*, so be gentle!
I purchased an Hitachi 30GB TravelStar [formerly IBM] to upgrade the
6.4GB original equipment, but as yet haven't fitted it to my 1999 Sony
VAIO, and first need to flash the BIOS to be able to use all of it.
The biggest problem is to transfer all the OS/applications over to the
replacement drive, as unless you have an adapter [PCCARD or USB] to
enable mounting both drives simultaneously, it means removing the
current drive and then mounting it in a desktop to clone the contents
onto a 3.5" drive, remove that 2.5" drive and mount the new 2.5" and
clone back to it.
This will be the method that I'll use, I purchased a 2.5"-to-3.5"
adapter along with the replacement 30GB drive, and can mount both inside
one of my removable-HDD-drawers.
