subject: Antique Books?

JK>>How can one tell if a book is really an antique? I was guessing by
JK>>the binding. For example, my mom just bought a number of small books
JK>>with leather covers, they do look old, the salesperson clamined they
JK>>were from mid 1800, howver they are bound with glue not rope. Is this
JK>>a good sign that these are more like 1920s? How long have books been
JK>>glue bound? None of them have any dates in them, they are made by a
JK>>company from New York called the Little Leather book company.
Book bindings (especially leather) have been glued almost from the very
beginning. I'm not sure what you mean by "bound by rope", though, can you
elaborate?
The Little Leather books are all (so far as I know) reprints, and have some
collectibility as a set, but not as firsts or originals. Mid-19th Century is
about right, although I believe the series went on for a number of years.
