Of course the SBAUD name wouldn't be hard-coded in the app and it ought to
be something more general like \DEV\AUDIO. Use some IOCTL to configure
sample-rate, mono/stereo and bits/sample and any program that generates am
meaningful sequence of sample-values can be used as an audioplayer.

Because I cannot buy the DDK, and I will receive the DevCon CD's soon, I
think my best option is to make a named pipe server that listens to the
name AUDIO. Then, any program can just write to it without knowing that
it's writing to anything other than a file.

So, using the TAPE.EXE program that's part of tar, I nearly have all
recording and editing functions I need:

tape tell to query the current tape position
tape seek to seek to a certain position
tape file to skip songs forward/backward
tape mark to mark the end of a song
  tape read < \PIPE\AUDIO to play-back a song
tape write > \PIPE\AUDIO to record a song

This is also easy to combine with audio or compression/decompression
filters, and can be easily used across a network. This is one of the
reasons I like named pipes.

When my MMOS2 audio named pipe server is ready, I'll let you know. Of
course the complete app should include some fancy tape-deck PM Control with
nice PM Classes to manage the tapes. One 4 gig DAT tape can easily contain
6 to 10 audio CD's. It wouldn't be to hard to start a radio station using
OS/2!
