I'd guess it was more that it was over someplace "special" and apparently
out of reach of P-80s that made everyone frantic.
World War 2 was still bubbling away in the minds and hearts of the AAF
generals in '47. And the worry about the Godless Russian Menace was
appearing to be quite serious.
Think of this: there's something zipping around a secret place, and the
military has no way to stop it, or even to indentify it. Then, suddenly,
fortune hands them one of the mystery craft...and that artifact takes
nothing from the mystery, but compounds it be not being comprehensible.
I think that I, were I to encounter such a situation, might want to keep
it all secret simply because I couldn't explain it.
