subject: As I See It

Ed Grinnell had this to say to Rob Ferrara and I quote:

RF> Shuler missed terribly on open receivers even when he did
 RF> have time.
EG> Which, would be AT BEST, all of 3 times. I say that because he was 5
EG> of 11 with 3 interceptions so that meant that there were 3 passes that
EG> didn't get caught by either side.:-)
All three of the interceptions were terrible passes. If the
receiver is not standing still, Shuler misses them.
RF> Steve Young was 18-21 despite getting sacked five
EG> Come on, Rob. The 49ers had little to do to make it 33-0. Young got
EG> sacked 6 times, however, more often than not, he had plenty of time
EG> AND a lot more time than any of the Saints' QBs.
Young was sacked five times, Druckenmiller once. The total was
       six.
RF> You will note that 8 of the 11 head coaching vacancies went to
RF> former head coaches. It's not that much of a black vs white
RF> thing as it is a proven box office head coach vs an unproven
 RF> head coach.
EG> There were only 10 new head coaches. All that happened to Coslet was
EG> that he had the interim removed and he deserved it.
It counts though. The interim coach here did not have that
       happen.
EG> Despite the track records of blacks in the NBA, NFL and MLB, the
EG> owners are all too willing to recycle WHITE coaches or hire unproven
EG> white coaches rather than give a black like Thomas or Lewis a chance.
But they have, Ed. They've given Ray Rhodes, Tony Dungy, and
Dennis Green chances. There will be more. Last year, the trend
was to get a coach that's been a head coach in the NFL. That
helps at the box office. I expect that trend to continue. I
expect about 8 vacancies next year. 5 to 7 of them will likely
go to former head coaches. 14 of 30 head coaches in the NFL have
past head coaching experience. I won't deny that all of those
       coaches are white.
As for Sherman Lewis, he might do himself better by getting out
of Green Bay this year even if that head coaching position eludes
him again. Mike Holmgren is always going to get the lion's share
of the credit for the Pack's offensive success.
                                                  Rob
