There are Dobros and there are Nationals, and never the twain shall meet.
I have a CD called "The Great Dobro Sessions" which has 21 tracks of
"country-style" Dobro music--but it's not limited to Nashville-sounding
stuff. Jerry Douglas, a noted D player, does "Birdland" and it's great.
The album's on Sugar Hill label, SH-CD 2206. A good primer on the sound.
Colin James has a new album coming out called "National Steel Guitar".
Guess who's gonna be first in line for that one? He's an excellent Blues
player, in my estimation.
I'm making progress toward having some disposable income. I've been
daydreaming of a National Style O ($1600 or so); but all I'm going to be
able to afford is an ASAT or a Tele. And I'll be okay with that if it
happens.
DM>When played well, those instruments can sound like a one mand band.
Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night" is a Blues classic. If you've
never heard it, check it out. He makes whatever guitar he's playing slide
on absosutely sing and mourn.
