AM> I tried out the V32b/MNP4 tonight as Paul requested a while back due
AM> to the new Thunder supposedly being faster at MNP4, and the thruput
AM> was pathetic. About 103%, as opposed to 114% with V32b/V42/V42b.

RS> Rather strange. Corse it really needs more testing, its even possible
RS> you have for example seen double sending very late in that file and
RS> thats why the result wasnt very good.

AM> Could be, as I wasn't watching all that carefully. I'd changed the
AM> modem config the day before, and only realized it when the %
AM> efficiency stat came up at the end of the poll. Normally it's
AM> 1650cps (114%) give or take a bit. What rates do you get when
AM> everything is going al right?

It all gets a bit complicated by the fact the different comms progs give
different numbers too. Even different numbers at each end of the same
file transfer, what say Telemate calls it and what say Maximus calls it
varys too.

Short story is that now that the Spirit has been thunderised I get mid
1600s all the time unless I have got an MNP4 double send pop up thru the
file. When it was just a plain Spirit the MNP4 was notoriously slow,
1500ish was typical.

AM> Which correction/compression protocol do you normally use?

Thats varied quite a bit too. Previously I was using Telemate with MNP4
coz of the double sending on V42bis with the Spirit and Tbunder. Now I
use FrontDoor and use V42bis coz Pauls Binkley pause of 0.2 secs at the
file transfer start completely eliminates double sending at V42bis.
FroDo calls that mid 1600s on a decent sized file.

RS> Thats said too vaguely. Its not clear if you are saying you get
RS> connection/negotiation problems one way and not another or just what.

AM> Come to think of it, I've never had a connection problem of any kind,
AM> whether I use V32b/MNP4 or V32b/V42/V42b (normal setting). The odd
AM> thing is though that Brenton at least used to get the occasional
AM> failed negotiation, at least in the early days with the Sportster -
AM> haven't thought to ask recently though.

I currently get a few with V42bis with FroDo. Bit hard to tell at what
rate tho, the numbers are too low so far. Prior to it being Thunderised,
for months I had perfect connects every time at MNP4.
