Did you see the (I think) Slashdot reference to someone's thesis on the
likelihood of The Matrix virtual reality being actually real?

They did some calculations (seriously) and concluded that it is VERY likely
that we are now actually in The Matrix.

In brief:
- Computers get smarter.
- Simulations of virtual reality will happen.
- In such a space, we couldn't detect what was happening.
- It is likely to be stable, and so exist for a lot longer than the
current environment.
