Actually (And I hate to admit this in public) for me it was the
music. The theme blew me away. I didn't realize that the film was
slow and kinda stilted until much later.
TMP *could* have been a lot better. Picture what the
confrontation between Kirk and Nogura must have been like. Wouldn't
you have given back about 5-8 minutes of screen-staring wonder to
actually *see* Kirk bully Nogura into giving him the Enterpise back?
TWOK is said to reference "Moby Dick" pretty heavily. Wouldn't
it have been a better story if TMP had. Picture Kirk as an obsessive
mad man. He's going to have the Enterprise back if the cost is the
 whole Earth itself!
There could have been some scene chewing on that one. Coulda
 been much more story.
Years later I was watching TMP on video. I realized that the FX
were much better paced when viewed on fast-forward. It helped. I have
even heard that some fans have made "Home" edits that severely reduce
 the long FX shots involved.
Underneath the pretentious effects and grinding pacing, there
might be a story hiding, but TMP isn't as good at this as TWOK.
But it's still Trek and I still like it.
