DP~I do NOT believe in "pur lange" (or whatever that expression was that
  ~seemed too much like "the master race"), nor do I believe in language
  ~laws or language police.  But I also don't believe most of Quebec believes
  ~in those either.  I spoke with a MOntrealer whose mother tongue was
  ~French, and she said that after watching a particularly nasty exchange
  ~between a French person and an English-only person, she was so ashamed that
  ~she decided never to speak French again.  Even though shopkeepers quickly
  ~catch on to her accent, she refuses to speak in anything other than
  ~English.  I don't think she's in the minority there.

I did some work a while back for Statistics Canada and had to talk
to a lot of people in Northern Ontario very close to the Quebec
border. My french is 'marginal' (at best) and I expected problems
but most people were friendly and went out of their way to converse
in whatever language we were using - usually a combo of the two...
I suspect, as you say, that most Quebecers are the same and don't
Really care all that much. I also think that most of Quebecs language
laws are probably unconstitutional.. Like the girl who was expelled
from school for speaking English in the halls BETWEEN classes..
Tends to make you want to do the same back to them if you don't
realise that 95% of the problems come from 5% of the people..  Rob
