I still have no answer for the Box mode problem (though it is "nice" to see
I am not alone in experiencing this) - but I have solved the mouse problem.
A comment by Chris Antos prompted me to check my config again - I had
enabled "quick edit" for console sessions which disabled the mouse for TSE
functions.  Since TSE has its own way of handling the Win Clip Board, I just
removed that "quick edit" feature, and all's well again.  
Re the box mode question - I still have TSE2.0 on my system, and checked it -
there the box mode works just as it ought.  So this does not seem to be a
console config matter, but rather a TSE2.8 problem.  (Although some folks
report no problem chez eux...)
