It may be a little late in the race, but I found the following snippet
in the configuration file for Fidogate.
# Kill routed EchoMail
# (default: saved in bad packet)
KillRouted
So indeed, in the days of Yore, it did/could happen and software was adapted
to cope with it. ;)
