Funny you should ask that - Antec makes just such a power supply. :) The readings themselves are obtained from a voltmeter... I use a digital model here, and yes, using the trim tabs, you can adjust the rails to read exactly what they're supposed to. The Antec Power Supply Tester doesn't actually give you the readings - it just gives you a way to turn the power supply on without attaching it to a motherboard, and provides a constant load on that PSU, so you can take readings with the voltmeter while the power supply runs at a known rate. You can get +12V and +5V readings off any hard drive power cable, but the +3.3V rail that powers the CPU is tough to get a direct reading on without this little gizmo. It's actually better to take the readings directly off the lines than rely on the onboard sensors on the motherboard... I've noticed discrepancies between the reported voltages and the readings I've seen "live" on the digital voltmeter I have. The Intel motherboard I mentioned last night is showing 4.87V while the voltmeter shows 4.97V (Red wire), and the 11.875V on the monitor is bang-on 12.00V (yellow wire) when measured directly. Power supply is an Enermax EG465P-VE "Whisper", motherboard is an Intel D865PERL running a Socket 478 P4 3.0GHz. In summary - if you're going to tune it, do it right! :) -Derek Derek W.
