Sorry, that was a typo. It should have been 10. 
NEC places no limit on the number of outlets connected to a general 
lighting or small-appliance branch circuit. As a rule of thumb I limit my 
runs to ten outlets, preferably less.
Section 223-b sets a limit of 1,500 VA, with each outlet rated at 180-VA. 
This would limit the number of outlets to eight per branch circuit. 
However, it goes on to except "lighting fixtures, general illumination, 
and small appliance branch circuits" from the above.
