From: "John Beamish" I thought I recalled that someone here was involved in the book publishing industry. This piece, describing the preparation of text books makes interesting, eye-opening (occasionally eye-popping) reading. I have no idea if there is a similar process in the GWN (yet another research project for a future day). http://www.edutopia.org/magazine/ed1article.php?id=art_1195&issue=nov_04 Amid the drier sections are little gems anecdotally making a point: "A social studies textbook was attacked because a full-page photograph showed a large family gathered around a dinner table. The objection? They looked like Arabs. Did we rise up indignantly at this un-American display of bias? We did not. Instead, we said that the family was Armenian. It worked." The whole topic is a bit outside the normal Canopus/Barkto panorama of discussion points -- but I found it to be a worthwhile detour. --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 5030/786 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
