Since I've almost always been using a second thread for reading,  I hadn't
run into your timing problem --- great point.  The only solution (with a
single thread) is to use a short timeout value and call DosRead() one byte
at a time -- and we all know how bad that is.

I don't believe there IS any overhead.  Even the linear
"overflow" single thread buffer scheme is double-buffering, 
which,  if I remember correctly,  was Mark's biggest complaint about a two
threaded approach.
