It doesn't explain anything about Phil and Adam. Life in the UK was very
different when Adam and Phil were children. For that matter, it was still
different when Phil's children, at least, were young. (I seem to remember
Adam mentioning children, but I can't remember if they were his or
relations.)

If you want something to relate it to, I imagine the same differences apply
to life in the USA over the generations as well.
