subject: Antique Books?

How can one tell if a book is really an antique? I was guessing by the
binding. For example, my mom just bought a number of small books with
leather covers, they do look old, the salesperson clamined they were from mid
1800, howver they are bound with glue not rope. Is this a good sign that
these are more like 1920s? How long have books been glue bound? None of
them have
any dates in them, they are made by a company from New York called the Little
Leather book company.
Any ideas?
thanks
-Jamie
