Hi Joe,
-> Greensboro or the Asheboro papers. Since it looks like we are going
-> to have one ugly cold winter I -had- planned on setting up a feeder
-> here to help the little guys out. I've definitely changed my mind on
-> that.
It does look like we're going to get a cold one; the weather man on tv
said we've already had 8 freezes this year. Our first freeze last year
was on Thanksgiving. The birds outside have already eaten almost all
the dogwood berries on my trees. I'm not sure what we should do about
feeding them when their food runs out. Maybe throw food on the ground
in different places where we aren't going to be walking around. ????
-> cold, hard winter is just what is needed for the sparrows' sake;
-> those exposed/infected that are unable to see well enough to forage
-> for food and seek good shelter will most likely die off. It is
-> rather sad to think of, but, then again it is nature's way of taking
-> care of itself....
They are sparrow-sized birds, house finches. You are right, it is sad.
I think nature does not deal kindly with ungenetically diverse
populations. The native western house finches aren't having a
disease outbreak.
