Ed Grinnell had this to say to All and I quote:
EG> Ok, so Dallas got a break, so did Washington when they were given the
EG> ball on a fumble that wasn't.
What game was this?
EG> The boobirds are out in New Orleans, however, I wouldn't go out and
EG> put the blame on Shuler. The offensive line that I saw playing the
EG> other day would try the talents of ANY player (Look at how Aikman
EG> looked Monday night). Heath had a couple of bad tosses, however, he was
EG> ably assisted by not having time to set up.
Shuler missed terribly on open receivers even when he did
have time. Steve Young was 18-21 despite getting sacked five
times. Passing to catch up is a miserable way to make a living
in the NFL. The 49ers looked fairly crisp but they played on a
very short field all day.
EG> You know, for years I p&m about the fact that I thought that Tony
EG> Dungy was head coach material and that he was being screwed by his
EG> color. It took a little time last year for him to get his system put
EG> in, however, by the end of the year, you could see a different Bucs'
EG> team and this year, they're ready to make the transition to winner (Not
EG> necessarily Super Bowl or even playoff but at least a team that will
EG> win more than they lose). This year there were a lot of openings (Ok,
EG> let's be honest and discount the Jets) and yet, Sherman Lewis wasn't
EG> given a chance for any of those offers. Yes, they had to wait until
EG> after the Super Bowl, however, those same owners were more than willing
EG> to wait for Dave Wannstedt, Mike Holmgren and Norv Turner. I'm
EG> championing Lewis, however, there are several blacks that were
EG> qualified and didn't get interviews. Right now, I don't see many
EG> openings next year and if there are, the top name, as it should be,
EG> will be George Seifert. I do think that after him, the other people
EG> interviewed will also be white.
You will note that 8 of the 11 head coaching vacancies went to
former head coaches. It's not that much of a black vs white
thing as it is a proven box office head coach vs an unproven
head coach. The NFL desperately needs an infusion of new ideas,
talent, and innovation yet they are scared to death to go out on
that limb. I suspect Seifert will also be the top candidate
next year. He fits my profile (Proven former head coach) and
yours (White). My profile is what owners look for. Not yours.
EG> 52 home runs and climbing. *IF* McGwire breaks Mantle's record with
EG> 62, he will also tie Ruth's two-year record of 114 home runs. I know
EG> that people think he's a long shot but most of them have never seen
EG> him when he's in a groove.
Mantle? 62 will definitely break his record. As will 61, 60,
59, 58, 57.......
