Don't think that this doesn't happen to the best swr meters.  My Bird 43 
experiences this as well.  Just for grins, insert the meter between the 
feedline and the antenna, then between the radio and the feedline.
Let us know what the different readings are.
... It's not bass unless you can feel it!
